Hand-Upper Extremity&Microsurgery Unit

The Department of Hand Surgery was  founded in 1997. It is one of  the largest hand units in Egypt. The department serves a large population in Egypt, and Most of major upper extremity traumas are referred to our unit.

Although the main interest is focused on upper extremity trauma and reconstructive surgery,  all kinds of  elective  upper extremity surgery  are  covered. Much time is devoted to secondary reconstructive procedures, wrist problems, nerve entrapments, congenital malformations, spastic conditions in children and Dupuytren's contracture.

We also have a great interest in rheumatoid surgery, especially difficult cases requiring advanced arthroplastic procedures.

Areas of specialty include:
  • acute trauma evaluation

  • reconstruction after trauma

  • treatment of congenital hand issues

  • burn reconstruction

  • nerve and tendon reconstruction

  • wrist surgery

  • Microsurgery

  • Reimplantations

  • Arthroplasty and arthroscopy of the upper limb.

Case report
A 6 years old child with old osteomyelitis of the distal humerus  leading to distruction of the joint and abnormal joint movement.
The 2nd metatarso phalyngeal was excised with its feeding vessels and transferred to the elbow region and reimplanted in a reversed fashion using the surgical Microscope to allow flexion and extention  giving the patient 0-110 range of the elbow joint movement which became stable with no rotational deformity .
The operation lasted for 11 hours.
