The Liver Unit was opened in March 1999, honored by the care of His Excellency  President Mohamed Hosny Mubarak The Liver Unit is located on the third floor of the Nasser Institute for Research & Therapy, with a panoramic view of the widest & most beautiful part of Cairo.

A ) Medical care for patients: The Unit provides highly specialized care for patients with liver, biliary, or pancreatic problems, e.g.

1. Viral hepatitis

2. Liver cirrhosis & its complication 

3. Bleeding esophageal varies

4. Refractory assets

B ) Surgeries: A wide variety of surgical procedures are performed in the unit, e.g.

1. Liver resections

2. Resections of panreatic tumor

3. Biliary reconstruction

4. Laparoscope's cholecysiectomy

5. Peritonea Venous shunt (Denuer) for refractory

6.  Poito Systems shunts

7. Set-up for liver transplantation

C ) Management of Liver Tumors: The Unit offers many therapeutic options for patients with liver tumors including:

1. Liver resections

2. Radio frequency ablation

3. Alcohol injection

4. chewo embolization

D ) Endoscopies: Both Diagnostic & therapeutic including:

1. Injection  sclerotheopy               2. ERCP

Scientific & Research Activities 

Aiming to provide betters care, the Unit holds regulars scientific meetings and conferences, discussing different management protocols and complex patient problems. There are many ongoing studies assessing  different modalities of treatment in patients with viral hepatitis, liver tumors, etc. There also continues collaboration between the Unit and similar units all over the world, particularly Europe, USA and Japan.
