Patient Admission

  • The patient is asked to arrive to the hospital one day prior to surgery at 10 a.m Once arrived,he is met with our nursing coordinator which leads him to a comfortable waiting area together with his family and answer all his questions on his expected operation.

  • Before admission the patient is checked and filed by our registrar to make sure of no contraindications for surgery then led to their rooms then consented for surgery.

  • Appropriate treatment is revised and checked and his pre-medications written.

    Patient preparation

     

  • The patient is checked by the cardiac and anesthetic consultants the night of surgery

  • The patients are asked to fast from the night of surgery till the morning.  If he is an after-noon case, he is allowed a light breakfast at 6 a.m. the day of operation.

  • The patients are shaved the morning of surgery and prepared according to the infection control protocol.

  • The patient is then gowned at the designated time and taken to theatre on a trolley by a nurse after giving him his pre-medication.

  • All patient’s documents are then re-checked by the theatre head-nurse which leads the patient to the transfer area.

  • A full blood count and renal and liver functions are ordered as a routine and charted as a reference for further comparisons.

  • Echo-Doppler is re-ordered if there is doubt about a new event or the last echo is more than 3 months old.

  • The patient is given a booklet with all the pre-operative operative and post-operative instructions are included is simple Arabic words and he is asked to reed through this booklet the day before the operation.

    Out-patient preparation

     

  • Patient arrives in the department to be seen by one of our trained secretaries.

  • The patient are given a list of all the investigations needed to be prepared to be seen by the consultant in the out-patient department.

  • He is given a list of the names of all the consultants and the times of their clinics.

  • Once he is seen by the consultant and approved for surgery, he is given a fixed date for hospital admission.

    Patient discharge

  • Patient investigations are performed on the 5th day post-operatively including echo-doppler, E.C.G., chest X-ray, blood picture and chemistry.

  • Investigations are revised and the patient is prepared to be discharged on the 7th post-operative day.

  • Before discharge, the patient’s drains sutures are removed, given his reports, given his medications, and has a date fixed in the out-patient clinic in two weeks time.
