Aanalysis
of the results of children with primary brain tumors admitted at the
Pediatric Oncology Unit, Nasser Institute Hospital for Research and
Treatment, during the period between January 2001 and December 2004.
Twenty
patients of the survivors were examined for neurocognitive and
behavior disorders.
Delay at diagnosis in relation to the
outcome
Kaplan-
Meier curve for EFS in relation to the delay at diagnosis (P=.0002).
Increase latency between onset of symptoms and
diagnosis had adversely affected the disease outcome (P=.0002). Patients
who were diagnosed in less than 3 months had 3-years EFS of 56.8% which
is significantly higher than those diagnosed after more than 3 months
(15%).
EFS in relation to tumor initial size
Kaplan- Meier curve for EFS according to tumor size (<5
Cm vs. ≥5 Cm); (P=.0001)
Initial tumor size significantly affected the survival (P=.0001).
Patients with tumor size <5 Cm at diagnosis had 3-years EFS of 55%
versus 10% for those with tumor size ≥ 5 Cm.
EFS of
non- metastatic patients with gross surgical resection in relation to
non-metastasis patients with non-gross surgical resection
Kaplan- Meier curve for EFS of non- metastatic patients (with gross
surgical resection) in relation to non-metastasis patients (with
non-gross surgical resection) (P= .0085).
There was a statistical significant correlation
between EFS and non metastatic patients with gross resection / non
metastatic patient with non-gross resection (P=.0085).
Surgical resection and outcome
Kaplan- Meier curve for EFS in relation to (gross /non-gross)
surgical resection of the tumor (P=.0001).
There was a statistical significant correlation
between surgical resection of the tumors and EFS (P=.0001). Patients
undergone gross surgical resection had 3-years EFS of 58.4%, while those
undergone non- gross surgical resection had EFS of 20%

Behavior disorders among the
studied survivors
Most patients had experienced more than one
psychological behavior disorder. Hyperactivity was the most common
behavior disorder followed by Anxiety withdrawal, Attention
deficit, Conduct disorder and Psychotic behavior.
